What Paperwork to bring when Trading in your Vehicle

You should have the same paperwork for your trade-in vehicle as you would for selling a car privately, as the process is essentially the same.  Holm Automotive Center in Abilene, Ks can help make this as simple as possible for you.  Aside from state-required paperwork, you should also bring other documentation or vehicle items if you have them.

What to Paperwork to Bring for the Business Manager

Each state and dealer differs in its procedures for accepting a trade. Our Sales and Leasing consultants should give you detailed instructions about what to bring back to complete your car purchase.

1.  Current Registration:  This will tell us if there is a lien on your title, how the vehicle is titled and if the title is held at the state.

2. Title

3. Lien Release:  Your Business Manager at Holm Automotive can fax that to the state to receive a paper title or take to our local Department of Motor Vehicles.  We will have you sign a Kansas Secure Power of Attorney to allow us (your dealer) to assign the title to us on your behalf, just on the vehicle you are trading in to us.

4. Payoff Information: You will need this information if you have a current lien on your vehicle you are trading in.  This allows your Business Manager to call your lien holder and receive pay off information as well as request a lien release.

5. Proof of Insurance and Driver's License:  If you have not yet presented these to your Sales and Leasing Consultant please bring when you meet with your Business Manager.

Title Transfer Paperwork

  • You'll have to bring in your title to trade in  your car. Many states do not allow ownership transfers if a lien holder is listed on the title, which means that a bank has a financial interest in the vehicle. The original lien release must accompany the title. For older vehicles that don't have titles, a signed, state-issued bill of sale form and registration proves ownership and completes a transfer. If you do not have the required forms, work with your dealership to obtain them; many dealers have state forms on hand to complete or speed up the process. Or you may have to go to a motor vehicle department to apply for a duplicate title.
